India, Saudi Arabia can shape global AI rules for developing nations, says envoy

India and Saudi Arabia can help shape international rules for safe and inclusive artificial intelligence while giving greater attention to the needs of developing countries, India’s ambassador to the Kingdom, Vipul, has said.

Speaking to Gulf Madhyamam while leading the Indian delegation at the fourth UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence in Riyadh, Vipul said responsible AI governance was a priority for both countries.

He cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “AI for All”, saying technological development must provide fair access and benefit people across the world.

Vipul also highlighted India’s AI Impact Summit, which focused on regulatory frameworks, ethical use and balancing technological progress across three pillars: people, planet and progress.

He said India’s national AI governance framework was closely aligned with UNESCO’s recommendations for keeping the technology safe, secure and equitable.

The ambassador placed AI cooperation within the wider strategic partnership between India and Saudi Arabia.

As major developing economies and members of the G20 and BRICS, the two countries have the potential to influence global discussions on AI ethics and represent the development priorities of the Global South, he said.

Commercial links are also taking shape, with Indian technology companies and start-ups working in healthcare, education and financial technology expanding their presence in Saudi Arabia.

These businesses are adapting systems and services developed in India for use in the Saudi market.

Vipul praised UNESCO’s work on AI ethics and expressed India’s commitment to working with Saudi Arabia and other international partners to ensure the technology delivers positive benefits for society.
