India is monitoring 778 nationals on 28 ships near Strait of Hormuz, say officials

India is actively monitoring 28 shipping vessels carrying around 778 Indian nationals in the Persian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz as tensions continue to rise due to the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

According to Rajesh Kumar Sinha, Special Secretary in the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, 24 vessels with 677 Indian seafarers are located on the western side of the Strait of Hormuz, while four vessels carrying 101 individuals are positioned on the eastern side.

Sinha said the government is closely tracking the situation to ensure the safety and security of the seafarers. He said authorities, ship managers, and recruitment agencies are coordinating with Indian embassies and local authorities to provide assistance and medical support if required.

The ministry is monitoring the evolving maritime situation in the Persian Gulf and has strengthened preparedness measures to safeguard Indian vessels and crew members in the region.

Advisories have been issued by the Directorate General of Shipping directing Indian flagged vessels and Indian seafarers to adopt enhanced security precautions and comply with reporting protocols, including submitting real-time details of their movements.

Sinha said the government is maintaining regular communication with industry stakeholders to provide necessary support to shipping companies and seafarers affected by the developments.

He added that port operations across India remain stable despite the tensions in the region. Major ports have implemented operational measures such as continuous monitoring of vessel movement in coordination with shipping lines and vessel agents, as well as real-time assessments of developments in the region.

Dedicated 24-hour control rooms have been set up at the ministry and the Directorate General of Shipping to track the situation. Authorities are also maintaining contact with ship owners, operators, and seafarer associations to provide timely updates and assistance.

Ports have also been instructed to extend support to exporters and help ensure continuity of export and import trade operations.
