Yemen's Houthi rebels claimed on Wednesday to have launched attacks on a U.S. warship and a vessel named "Destiny" in the Red Sea, as part of their ongoing campaign to show solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
In a televised address, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea announced that they had used "appropriate naval missiles" to target an American destroyer named "Maysun" in the Red Sea.
Sarea further stated that the vessel "Destiny" was targeted because it was reportedly en route to the Israeli port of Eilat on April 20. However, specific dates of the attacks were not provided, reported Reuters.
The attacks by the Houthis in the Red Sea have led to disruptions in global shipping routes, compelling companies to seek alternative, longer, and costlier routes around southern Africa. Additionally, there are concerns that the conflict between Israel and militant groups could escalate and destabilize the broader Middle East region.
In response to the attacks on shipping, both the United States and Britain have conducted strikes against Houthi targets.
