Tehran: Funeral proceedings for Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei are set to begin on July 4, Iranian media reported.
According to a statement from the headquarters organising the commemoration, farewell ceremonies will be held at Imam Khomeini’s Mosalla prayer hall in Tehran on July 4–5, followed by processions in Tehran and the central city of Qom on July 6–7. The final ceremony is scheduled for July 9 in Mashhad, after which Khamenei will be interred at the shrine of Imam Reza.
Khamenei, who led Iran for 36 years, was killed on February 28 in a joint US-Israeli airstrike, Iranian and international reports said. His son Mojtaba Khamenei was selected as Iran’s new supreme leader in early March.
Iranian outlets also reported that four of Khamenei’s relatives, including a daughter, a grandchild and a son in law, died in the strikes, citing local sources.
