Brother of journalist Hossam Shabat dies after Israel blocks medical aid

Hassan Shabat, the brother of slain Palestinian journalist Hossam Shabat, died on Friday, December 12, after Israel denied the entry of medical aid into Gaza, his family said.

According to the family, Hassan’s health had deteriorated severely and required urgent evacuation from the besieged enclave. However, repeated requests for his evacuation were reportedly rejected.

The family said Hassan’s death was preventable and attributed it to the lack of access to life-saving medicines, as Gaza’s healthcare system has been crippled by Israel’s blockade and sustained bombardment, resulting in severe shortages of essential medical supplies.

Hossam Shabat, a journalist with Al Jazeera, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beit Lahia in northern Gaza on March 24, 2025. The 23-year-old was struck while covering protests in Jabalia.

Before his death, Hossam had also mourned the killing of Mansour, who died along with his wife and son when an airstrike hit their apartment in Khan Younis.
