'Maa Kaali': Raima Sen's film on Bengal's history to premiere at 55th IFFI

Mumbai: Actress Raima Sen’s upcoming trilingual film 'Maa Kaali - The Erased History of Bengal' is set for its world premiere at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI). The film, which also stars Abhishek Singh, is directed by Vijay Yelakanti and focuses on the pivotal events surrounding Direct Action Day in 1946. 'Maa Kaali' aims to shed light on the erased history of Bengal, revealing the truth behind the massacres in Calcutta and Naokhali, which are now part of present-day India and Bangladesh, respectively.

Director Vijay Yelakanti explained that the film is not intended to be a mass entertainer but rather a "mass thinker," designed to offer a lesson on preventing the repetition of history. He expressed gratitude for IFFI recognizing the importance of the film and said they were honored to have their vision aligned with such a prestigious platform.

The film will have its world premiere at IFFI in Goa on November 26, with the director, producers, and actors, including Abhishek and Raima, in attendance. Goa's Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, is also expected to make a special appearance at the premiere. Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister of Goa met with the 'Maa Kaali' team to discuss the film.

Abhishek Singh, an IAS officer-turned-actor, emphasized the relevance of 'Maa Kaali' in today's context, given the current scenario in Bangladesh. He noted that the film reflects on the religious disturbances that began in Bengal and that IFFI is the perfect platform for showcasing such an important film.

Written and directed by Vijay Yelakanti, 'Maa Kaali' is produced by TG Vishwa Prasad, co-produced by Vivek Kuchibhotla, and presented by People Media Factory, the makers of 'Karthikeya 2'. The film will be released in Hindi, Bengali, and Telugu in theaters in 2025.
