Sun Pharma has recalled several eye drop products in India as a precautionary measure following concerns over possible contamination.
According to a confidential letter issued by Sun Pharma Distributors Ltd to distributors on July 17, the company has decided to discontinue further distribution and withdraw existing stocks of several eye drop products from the market.
The products listed for withdrawal include Depopred 2ML, Brinolar (BKC Free), Brinzotim Eye Drops 5ML BKC Free, Lotepred-5ML, Lotepred 1% Eye Drops, Lotepred LS 0.2% Eye Drops 5ML, Lotepred T, Nepalact OD Eye Drops 3ML, Nepalact-Z, Toba-F and Nepalact Eye Drops 5ML.
The company instructed distributors to immediately stop billing the products and provide details of available stock. It also asked them to return all existing stocks, including those received from other sources, on priority.
Responding to the development, a Sun Pharma spokesperson said, "Patient safety remains our highest priority. We have taken all necessary steps in the best interest of patients and in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements. Our teams are working diligently to restore the availability of these products so that patients continue to have access to these treatment options."
An ophthalmology expert said many of the recalled eye drops are prescribed for patients recovering from eye surgery or managing conditions such as glaucoma, eye infections, allergies and ocular inflammation, where interruption of treatment could have serious consequences.
The expert advised patients not to continue using recalled products or stop treatment on their own, but to consult their ophthalmologist promptly so that a suitable alternative can be prescribed while ensuring continuity of care.
