Date raita: a traditional Arab remedy for summer woes

As temperatures soar during the summer months, people often seek ways to stay cool and hydrated.

Renowned celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar recently shared a remedy commonly used in Arab countries to combat the heat and alleviate issues like constipation and hair loss. Describing it as one of her favorite summer recipes learned from an Arabic client, Diwekar introduced the concept of date raita as a solution to various summer-related concerns.

The recipe involves combining home-set curd with soaked (for 30 minutes) and chopped dates, black salt, and freshly roasted cumin powder.

This concoction is believed to offer a refreshing and nutritious option to beat the summer heat and maintain overall well-being.

While the health benefits of date raita are acknowledged, its specific effectiveness for certain conditions lacks strong scientific evidence, said Dr. Vikas Jindal, a consultant in the department of gastroenterology at CK Birla Hospital in Delhi, to The Indian Express.

Dr. Jindal highlighted the nutritional value of dates, citing their richness in carbohydrates, nutrients, and fiber, which can aid in digestion and potentially alleviate constipation. However, he emphasized that a balanced diet comprising a variety of fruits and vegetables is essential for overall health.

Additionally, Dr. Jindal explained that dates are a good source of energy and contribute to weight management and blood sugar regulation, thanks to their low glycemic index and fiber content. While the probiotics in curd may support gut health, their impact on acidity requires further research.

Moreover, while date raita can be a nutritious addition to one's diet, it is unlikely to serve as a comprehensive solution for the mentioned health issues.
