Malappuram: A tourist boat capsized in Malappuram’s Tanur in Kerala on Sunday evening, killing at least seventeen people while several went missing. The mishap occurred around 7:30 pm at Ottumpuram Beach of Tanur, and the boat sank completely. Those inside the boat included women and children.
As per reports, the death toll is likely to rise, and rescue mission is facing the challenge of lack of light. The boat was believed to be carrying more than 30 people who were locals, which was more than its capacity.
Since it was a weekend, the beach was crowded, and the rescue efforts were started by those who were present there. As per initial reports, seven people were rescued.
Reports suggested that fire units from Malappuram and Kozhikode districts have been dispatched.
