Thiruvananthapuram: Swell waves battered the Kerala shore on Sunday, sending residents in coastal communities into panic. In Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, and Thrissur, the severity was higher. By 2:00 pm, the waves were breaking across the Kollamcode-Neerodi coastal road near the Tamil Nadu border with Kerala.
Additionally, it caused 50 families in the region to be inundated underwater. The district authorities at a government UP school in Pozhiyoor have begun preparing for the rehabilitation of the impacted families.
In Pulluvila, Adimalathura, Puthiyathura, Poonthura, and Thumba in Thiruvananthapuram, the swell waves caused fear, the New Indian Express reported.
Before the swell waves in Cherthala, Pallithode, and Purakkad, the sea receded in Alappuzha. Fishing equipment at Perinjanam in Thrissur was damaged by the waves.
A high wave advisory was released by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), cautioning individuals against going to the beach. Up until 11.30 p.m. on Sunday, the waves can reach a height of 1.5 metres.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority's member secretary, Shekhar Kuriakose, stated that surge waves are a temporary phenomenon during the season. “The swell waves during the high tide result in water inundation on the coast. Usually, the sea becomes normal soon,” he said.
