Thiruvananthapuram: Union Minister and BJP MP from Thrissur, Suresh Gopi, has dismissed allegations of voter fraud and complaints of filing a false affidavit, insisting that he has no role in the matter.
Speaking to reporters in Thrissur on Sunday, the actor-turned-politician struck a dismissive note. “Nothing doing,” he said, refusing to comment further.
“I don’t think I should react to these allegations. The Election Commission will address them in its press conference today. I am a Union Minister; I have no role in this matter,” he said, adding sarcastically, “If the Election Commission takes the issue to the Supreme Court, you go and ask the apex court.”
He also accused the Congress and CPI(M) of fueling the controversy to target the BJP. Gopi was interacting with the press after paying tribute at the statue of Sakthan Thampuran on the occasion of Chingam 1.
The controversy erupted after Thrissur police launched a probe into a complaint that Gopi had shifted his vote to Thrissur using a false affidavit ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. Adding to the row, documents surfaced showing his brother Subhash Gopi registered as a voter in both Thrissur and Kollam.
Meanwhile, the BJP has faced sharp criticism over allegations of large-scale bogus voting in Thrissur during the 2024 elections, particularly in apartment complexes. At Capital Village apartments in Punkunnam, nine fake votes were allegedly registered in one flat without the owner’s knowledge.
CPI(M) leaders also alleged irregularities in voter rolls at booths 36 and 37 within Thrissur Corporation limits, claiming outsiders were added as residents using false details. A spot inspection by the party reportedly found several listed flats locked and unoccupied.
The Election Commission is expected to issue a clarification on the allegations amid rising political tensions in Kerala.
