Partial power restrictions likely in Kerala amid 700 MW shortage

Thiruvananthapuram: Keralam is likely to face partial power restrictions between 6.30 pm and midnight on Thursday as the state confronts a possible shortage of around 700 MW during the evening peak hours, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) said.

The Grid Controller of India has informed the state that the power available to Kerala could fall short by around 700 MW between 6.30 pm and midnight. Availability of electricity from central generating stations has also declined, while supplies in the national power market remain constrained, according to KSEB officials.

The board has urged consumers to help ease the pressure on the power system by reducing electricity consumption between 6 pm and 11 pm, when demand is expected to be particularly high.

KSEB has advised households to avoid using air conditioners during peak hours and, if possible, switch them on only after 10 pm. Setting the temperature above 26°C can further reduce power consumption.

Owners of electric vehicles have been asked to shift charging to daytime hours or postpone it until after 11 pm. Consumers have also been advised against operating high-power appliances such as induction cookers, washing machines, water pumps, electric kettles and irons between 6 pm and 11 pm.

The board has recommended using BLDC fans and LED bulbs instead of conventional alternatives. Reducing fan speed, where practical, can also help conserve electricity.

KSEB has further cautioned consumers not to leave appliances such as televisions and air conditioners merely switched off through remote controls. Turning off their main power switches can prevent unnecessary standby consumption.

The conservation measures aim to reduce evening demand and help the state manage the anticipated power shortfall.
