Poonoor: A Malayali student, Abdul Fatah Nurani, has secured admission for a PhD at New York University with a scholarship worth ₹5.5 crore.
The prestigious scholarship includes the MacCracken Fellowship, Dean’s Doctoral Fellowship, and the Dean’s Humanities Scholars Program. He will pursue research in the Department of Middle Eastern & Islamic Studies.
His academic excellence is further reflected in receiving PhD offers this year from globally reputed institutions such as the University of Toronto, Vanderbilt University, the University of Pennsylvania, and City University of New York.
Earlier, he had secured admission with a fully funded fellowship for a Master’s program in Islamic Studies & Muslim Cultures at Columbia University, which he is currently completing.
Nurani completed seven years of undergraduate studies at Jamia Madeenathunnoor and later earned a gold medal in Political Science from the University of Hyderabad. He is also a recipient of the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Political Science.
He has presented research papers at platforms including the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies and Jawaharlal Nehru University.
A native of Kadakkattupara in Malappuram district, he is the son of Abdurahman Saqafi and Zainaba. He was congratulated on his achievement by Jamia Madeenathunnoor chairman Kanthapuram A. P. Aboobacker Musliyar and founder rector Dr Mohammed Abdul Hakeem Azhari.
