Alappuzha: Actor and BJP state vice-president Devan has resigned from the party, giving up both his organisational post and primary membership amid growing dissatisfaction with the state leadership. He publicly announced the decision at an event at the Kanichukulangara Devi temple, with SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan and BJP leader Radhakrishna Menon present on the stage.
Devan, who founded the Kerala People's Party in 2004, joined the BJP in March 2021 in the presence of Amit Shah, following the merger of his party with the BJP. He remained associated with the BJP through every election since then, but said he had come to realise that the party's political line did not suit him.
He said he had been considering the decision for four to five months and took the final step after self-reflection. Devan also indicated that he had raised certain demands with the BJP ahead of the 2026 election, but they were not implemented. He chose the temple, in the presence of the deity, to formally announce his exit.
At the temple event, Devan also highlighted his role in the BJP's electoral successes, including his contribution to Suresh Gopi's victory in the previous election and Rajeev Chandrasekhar's win this time. He also spoke about his work for BJP leader Shobha Surendran, underlining his involvement in the party's campaigns.
Devan has not disclosed the specific internal issue that led to his resignation, but his remarks made clear that he is deeply dissatisfied with the state leadership. He has also not indicated what his next political move will be, leaving his future course open as he exits the BJP after five years with the party.
