Heavy protests erupt after Kerala Youth Congress leader's arrest

Thiruvananthapuram: After the Kerala Police arrested Youth Congress President Rahul Mankoottathil from his residence in Pathanamthitta district, protests led by Youth Congress erupted across Kerala, The News Minute reported.

Mamkootathil was allegedly arrested by the Thiruvananthapuram Cantonment Police Station officials in a manner as if he was accused of some heinous crime.

Mamkootathil has been named as accused after the Youth Congress ran an enormous protest rally in Thiruvananthapuram last month against the Pinaryi Vijayan government.

According to Mamkoottathil’s mother, the police acted as if her son was accused of a serious crime. She was shocked that there were a considerable number in the police squad who arrived at their house early in the morning. They did not ring the bell but entered inside and did not state the reason for the arrest. They only said that they were following orders from higher-ups.

The Youth Congress rally last month staged vandalization and damaged police vehicles, TNM reports. A case was registered against Youth Congress activists. However, the first accused was the Leader of the Opposition in the state, VD Satheesan and Rahul Mamkootathil is only third.

As Mamkootathil got arrested, Youth Congress activists and his friends staged a protest, lying in front of the police jeep in which he was being carried.

A local leader says that the manner in which Mamkottathil was detained shows the arrogance of the Pinarayi Vijayan since the former has a clean track record in appearing before the police whenever he was asked, TNM reported.
