Thiruvananthapuram: The Cabinet has assigned Idukki District Collector to come up with a report on the encroachments in the district.
The collector also has been tasked to regularize buildings with an area up to 1,500 sq ft located on titled land up to 15 cents and are being used for own purposes.
In order to regularize the buildings, the government would be amending The Land Assignment Rules, 1964.
Regularising of buildings would require owners, if they are using buildings for commercial purpose, to prove that it is their sole means of livelihood. The Collector would examine each case before submitting it to the government’s decision.
The title-deeds of commercial buildings that didn’t fall in the aforesaid category would be annulled. The government would take over and vest with it those buildings and be leased out as per rules.
The government would take over and use for public purposes the buildings sans title-deeds and encroach on government land.
It is reported that the decision is made considering the unique situation of land issues in Idukki.
