Case charged against Sadhvi Saraswati

Kasargode: The police on Monday registered a case under non-bailable charges against Sadhvi Balika Saraswati, fordelivering a hate speech at a function organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad at Badiadka here on April 27. 

Sadhvi Saraswati is the president of the Madhya Pradesh-based Sanathan Dharma Prachar Seva Samiti.  The speech was widely seen as provocative,  and with content capable of creating division between communities.

The Badiadka police registered a case against her, on a complaint lodged by a Kasaragod resident,  under Sections 153 (deliberate bid to foment communal hatred), 295-A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), and 506-I (threat to cause death) of the Indian Penal Code, Sub-Inspector K. Prashanth said.

The meeting was chaired by Badiadka grama panchayat president and Congress leader K.N. Gopalakrishna Bhat, who drew flak from his party workers for attending the meeting. Mr. Bhat later said he would not take part in similar meetings in future.

A similar case was registered against her under Sectdion 153(A) of IPC in March 2015 in South Kannada district,  for a speech that could create communal disharmony.
