LDF govt shielding accused in Wadakkanchery gang-rape: Opposition

Thiruvananthapuram: The LDF government is shielding the accused in the Wadakkanchery gang-rape, alleged the UDF Opposition in the Assembly on Friday.

The Opposition moved a notice for adjournment motion alleging that a complaint on the issue had come up earlier and the police had shown lack of interest in probing it.

Anil Akkara, who moved the notice, sought a woman cop in the rank of a ADGP to probe the case and bring officials, including the Thrissur Range IG, under the ambit of the probe.

In reply to it, Law minister A K Balan said the government is looking at the allegation of gang rape charges against Vadakancherry municipality councilor Jayanthan very seriously.

On Thursday, a 33-year-old woman, who was allegedly gang raped by four persons including a local CPI(M) leader two years ago, sought the state government's help for justice through the media.

The victim and her husband, who addressed the media here with their faces covered, said the accused continued to "taunt" the woman about the horrifying incident, threatening that the video footage of the ghastly act would be made public.
