Order for CBI probe into Shukoor murder case stayed

Kochi: A division bench of the High Court on Monday put a stay on an earlier rule by a single bench that ordered CBI probe into the murder of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) worker Ariyil Shukoor, giving a temporary relief to the CPI-M in the state.

The court also ordered the CBI to stop the investigation in to the case. The order was issued considering a plea filed by CPI-M Kannur district secretary P Jayarajan and the party MLA T V Rajesh.

Justice Kemal Pasha had in February ordered CBI probe into the murder case, making life difficult for the Left party.

Jayarajan and Rajesh are 32 and 33 accused in the case.

In its order, the Court had said that it cannot "shut its eyes" to the hard reality that the State police cannot further investigate the case in a fair manner, where two political leaders are involved.

24-year-old Shukoor was murdered in 2012 because he was involved in an attack on Jayarajan and Rajesh while they were travelling in a vehicle, as per the chargesheet.
