Ramadan fast begins on Thursday

Kozhikode: Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting, will begin on Thursday in Kerala, religious scholars announced.

Kozhikode khasi Syed Muhammed Koya Thangal said that the crescent moon was spotted at Kappad, which makes Thursday the first day of the holy month.

V P Shuaib Maulavi, Imam of Palayam mosque in Thiruvananthapuram, also confirmed the sighting of the crescent moon.

In Islam, to determine the start of Ramadan, people look for the crescent and those who sight the new moon report to the authority to testify.

According to tradition, it is the sighting of the new moon with the naked eyes that signals the start of Ramadan.
