Nothing wrong in lighting lamp, says Samastha leader

Kozhikode: Amid sparking debates over the lighting of the ceremonial lamp at the public functions, a Samastha leader has come out with a divergent view on the issue.

M.P Musthafal Faizy, the vice-president of SYS (Sunni E.K faction), in a Facebook post, has said there is nothing wrong in doing so.

“Like a ribbon cutting ceremony or switching on the button or unveiling the written board, there is nothing wrong in conducting a lighting lamp ceremony for a good beginning,” he says.

The leader, however, says it is wrong to the Islamic values if it is conducted as a ritual like other religions.

He says it is the intention that matters the most.

His views are in contrast to the official stance of the Samastha Kerala Jem Iyyathul Ulama, of Sunni scholars and clerics who traditionally support the IUML, on the issue. They have already made it clear that customs like lighting the lamp are not in line with Islamic principles.
