NH devt: Chief secretary-led committee to monitor land acquisition

New Delhi: A special committee led by Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson will be constituted to monitor the land acquisition process for the development of national highways in the State.

The decision in this regard was taken in a meeting Chief Minister Oommen Chandy held with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari here on Tuesday.

The committee will analyse the acquisition process every month.

The Chief Minister has also informed the Centre that the National Highway development in the State can be done in 45 meters.

The committee will have five members in it, including the chairman. Other than the Chief Secretary, the other members will be officers from the department of Public Works and the National Highway Authority of India.

Since land acquisition has been a major issue in Kerala, the meeting decided to give a compensation higher than the market price in a proportion of 1:4 and 1:2 in urban and rural areas, respectively.
