RS seat: Party supports KPA Majeed, decision Saturday

Kozhikode: Muslim League State general secretary KPA Majeed is likely to be the candidate of the party for the Rajya Sabha (RS) polls as he has reportedly got the backing of several leaders at the state working committee meet held here on Friday.

The meeting, held at the League House at 3 p.m., was crucial as there were two contenders for the seat - Majeed and the State secretary and businessman P V Abdul Wahab. As per reports, Majeed has gathered major support of the party leaders.

Since Industries Minister PK Kunjalikutty was in favour of Majeed, most of the district presidents reportedly supported the decision.

State president Syed Hyderali Shihad Thangal will announce the final decision on Saturday.

The election to the Rajya Sabha will be held on April 20. The Congress and the CPI-M have fielded Vayalar Ravi and K.K. Ragesh respectively while the CPI has put up K. Rajan, hoping to cash in on the recent developments in the UDF.

The ruling UDF can win two seats and the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front Opposition, one, as per the present strength in the State Assembly. The IUML has been given one of the winnable seats by the UDF under the preferential voting system.
