Lucknow: Muslim women staged a demonstration outside the Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Bhavan on Saturday, carrying placards reading “I Love Muhammad”, days after more than two dozen people were booked for allegedly disturbing communal harmony during Milad-un-Nabi celebrations.
The protest, led by Sumaiya Rana, daughter of poet Munawwar Rana, saw participants chanting slogans in support of Prophet Muhammad. Tensions rose when police intervened, following which the women were detained and later released at Eco Garden.
Speaking to reporters, Sumaiya Rana accused the BJP-led state government of targeting Muslims. “The FIR is unconstitutional and questions India’s secular fabric. The law and order in Uttar Pradesh applies to only select religious communities,” she alleged.
