New Delhi: India reported 5,233 new Coronavirus cases on Wednesday, 41 percent more than the previous day, as infections soared sharply in several states.
The surge was led by Maharashtra, which recorded 1,881 new coronavirus cases last evening, a huge 81 percent jump and the highest since February 18.
The state also reported one case of B.A.5 variant, the state health department said.
State capital Mumbai alone accounted for 1,242 new cases, almost double Monday's count.
The total active cases of COVID-19 in India have risen to 28,857, the health ministry data showed today. Yesterday, the registered active cases were 26,976.
The active cases comprise 0.06 per cent of the total infections, the ministry said.
The total death toll in the country is now at 5,24,715. In India, the first death due to the COVID pandemic was reported in March 2020.
According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 85,35,22,623 samples have been tested up to June 7 for COVID-19. Of these 3,13,361 samples were tested on Tuesday.
The country also saw a total of 3,345 discharges in the last 24 hours, taking the total recovery rate to around 98.72 percent, and total recoveries data reached 4,26,36,710.
