Moradabad: The wife of a 22-year-old man approached the UP’s Moradabad police with a complaint against her husband over his proposed move to convert to Hinduism, alleging that he is playing tricks with the existing law to dodge a case of alleged ‘Love Jihad’ and the charges of triple talaq to marry his Hindu girlfriend.
According to the Moradabad police, Aamir Ali, who works as a sales executive in a private firm in Ghaziabad, has reportedly applied to the district magistrate (DM) expressing his desire to convert to Hinduism and seeking protection from potential harm by members of his community.
Gulphansa, who is 19 years old and has a four-month-old daughter with Aamir Ali, stated that her husband has been in a relationship with a Hindu girl since 2014. Gulphansa learned about the relationship six months later and demanded that Ali sever all ties with the girl. However, the girl threatened Ali with filing a case of 'Love Jihad' against him, according to Gulphansa.
Gulphansa further stated that her family would also file a case of triple talaq against Ali if he divorces her. It is for these reasons that he applied for religious conversion, aiming to avoid legal action on both charges, she alleged.
Triple talaq, the practice of instant divorce by pronouncing 'talaq' three times, has been outlawed in India.
District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar Singh stated that the case is unique as the man's wife also filed a complaint regarding his alleged deceptive plan. Otherwise, the law does require permission from an officer for religious conversion.
She claimed that her husband was exploiting the existing laws and attempting to manipulate the situation, Shailendra Kumar said, adding that the additional district magistrate (ADM) and the senior superintendent of police have been assigned to investigate the matter thoroughly before taking any action. Meanwhile, the local police have stationed a constable outside Ali's residence to ensure his security.
Expressing her distress, Gulphansa sent a letter to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, pleading for his intervention and protection as a daughter of the state. She currently resides with her parents, as Ali has become unreachable, with his phone switched off and his residence locked from the outside.
