India is witnessing unusually warm nights alongside an intense heatwave, with the IMD warning that minimum temperatures are staying significantly above normal in several regions.
The weather agency said “warm night” conditions are likely across parts of Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, where minimum temperatures are expected to remain between 26 and 29 degrees Celsius for several days.
In Delhi, nighttime temperatures throughout April have remained above both recent averages and long-term normal levels. Data from the IMD showed minimum temperatures frequently crossed 22 degrees Celsius after mid-April, reaching nearly 28.5 degrees Celsius on April 29.
The trend has been observed across multiple states. At least 17 weather stations recorded minimum temperatures more than 5 degrees Celsius above normal.
Among the highest deviations were Umaria at 7.7 degrees Celsius above normal, Phalodi at 7.6 degrees Celsius above normal, and Muzaffarnagar at 6.1 degrees Celsius above normal.
Other locations with unusually high nighttime temperatures included Amritsar, Hisar, Rohtak, Chitrakoot, Satna, and Sundergarh.
Meteorologists warned that warm nights can intensify heat stress because the body gets less time to cool down after daytime heat. The risk is particularly high for elderly people, outdoor workers, and residents in poorly ventilated homes.
