Vijay to hold his party's office-bearer's meeting on Feb 19

Chennai: Superstar Vijay of the Tamil film industry, who has recently launched his own political party Tamizhaga Vetrik Kazhagam (TVK), informed that the party would be holding a meeting of its office bearers on Monday, IANS reported.

The meeting is scheduled for 9 am at the party headquarters in Panaiyur.

Vijay had stated that the party is aiming for the 2016 assembly elections in the state and not the Lok Sabha polls this year.

The party district office bearers and state office bearers will participate in the meeting in which decisions regarding the 2024 general elections will be announced.

IANS earlier reported that Vijay is likely to extend a helping hand to BJP in the general elections. However, neither Vijay nor his office bearers subscribe to the likely support his party would extend to the BJP in the said elections.

In Tamil Nadu, two former Chief Ministers, M G Ramachandran (MGR) and J Jayalalithaa, were superstars of Tamil tinsel world. Muthuvel Karunanidhi, DMK leader and former chief minister of the state, was one of the foremost scriptwriters in the Tamil film industry.

This shows that the Tamil film industry and the Dravidian politics of the state are intertwined, and the entry of Vijay may take Tamil politics by storm as he is a superstar of Tamil tinsel town.

The name "Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam," translates to "Tamil Nadu Victory Party."

While announcing the launch of his party, Vijay expressed his commitment to both his ongoing film commitments and active engagement in public service through politics.

He emphasised his gratitude towards the people of Tamil Nadu and stated, "I consider this as my gratitude towards the people of Tamil Nadu." The announcement was met with spontaneous celebrations by his fans, reflecting the trend of stars transitioning from cinema to politics in the state, as witnessed with the late MG Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa.
