Chennai: Actor-politician Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is expected to resume his election campaign from Salem after suspending all political activity in the wake of the Karur tragedy that claimed 41 lives.
The incident occurred when a massive crowd surged towards Vijay during a rally in Karur, forcing the party to halt campaigning. TVK insiders say the actor-turned-politician remains deeply affected by the disaster but is determined to continue his political journey.
Vijay recently attended the Special General Committee and Executive Committee meetings of the TVK in Chennai, where he vowed to press ahead with renewed resolve and sharply criticised the ruling DMK government. His remarks reportedly drew strong support from district secretaries and office-bearers.
Leaders from Salem urged him to restart his campaign in their district, citing its strong support base and proximity to Namakkal and Karur, where he had earlier held large rallies. According to party sources, Vijay agreed in principle, and preparations are now under way for a comeback rally.
Senior TVK figures stressed that the final decision on the date, venue and schedule will rest with the party’s high command and general secretary. Salem district executives said they are ready to organise the event once approval is given, with state-level leaders expected to visit soon to assess venues, apply for police permission and coordinate security in light of the Karur tragedy.
With the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approaching, expectations among TVK cadres and Vijay’s supporters are high. Many believe his return to the campaign trail, beginning in Salem, will energise the party and set the tone for the crucial polls ahead.
