New Delhi: Uttarakhand is poised to become the first state to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) with the state Assembly taking up the final draft today.
It comes just days after the state cabinet approved the draft, which was reportedly prepared by a committee set up by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.
The committee interacted with more than 2 lakh people and key stakeholders, according to NDTV.
Meanwhile, states such as Assam and Madhya Pradesh where the BJP is in power may well follow suit and implement the law.
A common civil code is in place in Goa since it was under Portuguese rule.
The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is all about a set of common laws for all Indians on matters including marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption.
Applicable to all Indian citizens, these laws are not based on any religion.

Alongside giving adoption right to everyone, the bill will ensure equal inheritance right to both the son and daughter.
