UP cop who ‘accidentally’ shot woman in head, arrested

A sub-inspector who was absconding since he ‘accidentally’ shot a woman in the head using his service revolver, was arrested on Saturday, officials said.

The victim, 52-year-old Ishrat Nigar, succumbed to the bullet injury during treatment on Wednesday. A warrant was issued against the accused, Manoj Sharma, who fled the scene on December 8.

A reward of Rs 20,000 was also announced on information leading to his arrest. Sharma was suspended with immediate effect after the incident.

“The sub-inspector was arrested when he was going to meet someone in Aligarh. He was produced before a local court which sent him to judicial custody,” Aligarh Circle Officer Abhai Kumar Pandey said, reports Indian Express.

Sharma was in charge of the Bhujpura outpost under Kotwali police station. The incident took place when Ishrat, an Umrah aspirant, had gone to the police station along with her son for passport verification.

The CCTV footage of the incident has been doing the rounds on social media, showing the officer cocking his pistol inside a police station when suddenly it goes off and hits the woman who was standing across the table in the head. She collapses immediately on the spot.

"SI Manoj Sharma was arrested in the Bannadevi Police area today. He was absconding since the incident," Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kalanidhi said.

Police have already arrested the policeman who handed the pistol over to the SI for negligence, the SSP said.
