Bengaluru: A youth in Karnataka allegedly killed an e-commerce delivery executive and burned his body after he was unable to pay for an iPhone he ordered, The Indian Express reported.
Police arrested the 20-year-old and identified him as Hemanth Datta, a resident of Arasikere town in the Hassan district, and the deceased as Hemanth Naik, a 23-year-old.
The arrestee, Datta, ordered the iPhone from Flipkart and had to pay Rs 46,000 for delivery. Naik came with the delivery on February 7, and Dutta asked him to open the package. Naik refused, saying that he could not take back the package if he opened it and asked Dutta to pay.
According to police, Dutta then allegedly stabbed Naik to death, kept him in his house for the next four days and burned it near a railway bridge.
On February 8, Naik’s brother filed a missing complaint with the police. On February 16, Naik’s brother was informed by his friend about the charred body near the railway bridge, suspecting that it could be of Naiks.
Naik’s brother again approached the police, and they registered a murder case and started tracking Naik’s phone. Police learnt that Naik’s phone’s last known location was near Datta’s residence. This led to a raid of Dutta’s house, and police found Naik’s phone along with other articles.
NDT reported that Dutta was captured on CCTV cameras. He was seen riding a two-wheeler with the body towards the rail tracks. He was also seen buying petrol in a bottle from a pump.
Naik had dropped out of college and went to Bengaluru looking for a job.
