A fortnight-long lockdown began in Tamil Nadu today for two weeks till May 24. As the government provided sufficient time to stock up on essentials, no rush was witnessed in shops on Sunday.
However, the TASMAC shops of Tamil Nadu conducted business worth Rs 900 crores as people stocked up for the two-week lockdown. Though journalists, health care workers, construction workers, food delivery agents etc., ensured roads aren't deserted in Chennai, Trichy wore a deserted look due to heavy police deployment. Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Madurai and Coimbatore too witnessed very low vehicular traffic. Police across the state verified the details of those who ventured out and flagged down vehicles to check for unnecessary travel.
Officials are of the opinion that in two days, things will fall into place, and people will abide by the government directive.
