Two arrested in Karnataka social boycott case linked to woman’s suicide

Two people have been arrested in Yadgiri district of Karnataka after a 46-year-old woman died by suicide following a social boycott that cut off her family’s livelihood, police said.

The deceased, Kamalamma Suryavanshi, belonged to the Shillekyata community and died near Joladadagi village on Saturday evening.

Police said the accused, Amalappa Kattimani and Shivanna Natikar, have been taken into custody, while three others remain absconding.

According to investigators, the family was subjected to a social boycott that prevented them from selling fish or finding buyers, cutting off their primary source of income. The sustained economic and social pressure is believed to have caused severe distress, leading to her death.

In a complaint filed by her husband, Yallappa Suryavanshi, the boycott was triggered by claims that their son Erriswamy was in a relationship with his niece.

Police said the family was ostracised and faced ongoing mental harassment that affected their livelihood.

A case has been registered at the Wadigere Police Station under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with instigating social boycott and harassment. Authorities said efforts are underway to locate the remaining accused.

The incident comes months after another case of alleged harassment in Yadgiri, where a woman was reportedly stripped, assaulted, and tortured over accusations of an affair. Eleven people were named in that case, with five arrests made.
