Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee attacked during visit to party worker's family

Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee was heckled and attacked with egg pelting during a visit to South 24 Parganas' Sonarpur on Saturday.

Banerjee had travelled to meet party workers who faced violence after the Trinamool Congress lost the recent Assembly election. He was also reportedly visiting the family of a party worker who was killed.

Videos circulating on social media showed Banerjee, wearing a white shirt and a cricket helmet, moving through a large crowd as people shouted slogans, including "chor, chor". The footage also appeared to show people pushing and grabbing him during the confrontation.

Police personnel in protective gear intervened and escorted the Trinamool leader away from the area.

Speaking after the incident, Banerjee alleged that the attack was planned and claimed there was inadequate police presence at the site.

"Look what they have done to me. This was pre-planned. There are no police in the area. They want to kill me. I will not leave this place till the local police send their force and offer protection to the victims' families," he said, according to ANI.

The BJP denied any involvement in the incident.

State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said the party had no role in the egg pelting or manhandling and accused the Trinamool Congress of attempting to politicise the matter.

Trinamool leader Derek O'Brien condemned the incident and alleged that Banerjee's life had been put at risk during the visit.

The episode comes days after another Trinamool leader, four-time MP Saugata Roy, was reportedly heckled by people in his Dum Dum constituency following the party's electoral defeat.

The BJP secured a majority in the Assembly election, winning 208 seats, while the Trinamool Congress won 80 seats. Since the result, the Trinamool has faced internal criticism from some leaders, who have cited corruption and extortion allegations as factors behind the party's defeat.
