Top cop seeks action after Independence Day pigeon release flops

Raipur: District police chief Girija Shankar Jaiswal has sought action after the pigeon he released at an Independence Day event in Chhattisgarh's Mungeli dropped to the ground.

It is reported that the bird was sick and it could not take flight when the officer released it.

Girija Shankar Jaiswal wants disciplinary action against those responsible for the awkward situation.

Footage of the event showed the officer releasing the bird which instead of flying up dropped to the ground.

The incident, reminiscent of the pigeon scene from web series Panchayat, has gone viral on social media.

Social media users referred to the scene from the third season of Panchayat where the local MLA releases a pigeon and it drops dead.

The incident took place at the flag hoisting organised by the local administration with the BJP MLA and former minister Punnulal Mohle being the chief guest. Mungeli collector Rahul Deo was present at the event.

The pigeons released by the MLA and the Collector flew up but the top cop’s pigeon did not and he was seen asking around what went wrong.

Organisers quickly arranged another bird which successfully flew up when he released it.

The police officer has written to the district collector, seeking action in the matter, news agency PTI reported.

The top officer in the letter said: ‘During a major national festival like Independence Day, the incident of a pigeon falling to the ground was prominently broadcast on social media and other media. This situation was created as a result of presenting a sick pigeon for flying in the main district-level programme. Had it happened at the hands of the chief guest of the function and honourable MLA, then the situation would have been more unpleasant.’

He also added that ‘the officer responsible for this work has not discharged his responsibility properly.’
