TMC’s Moitra accuses Lok Sabha Speaker of suppressing Oppn voice

New Delhi: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra expressed the anguish of the opposition parties for not being allowed to speak in the Parliament by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. She expressed her concerns about the Speaker's stance, whom she accused of allowing only BJP leaders to speak. Mahua stated that the Speaker is leading in the front the efforts to undermine democracy.

Her tweet in this regard read “Last 3 days saw Speaker Om Birla allow ONLY BJP ministers to speak on mike & then adjourn parliament with not a single opposition member being allowed to speak. Democracy IS under attack. And the speaker leads from the front. And I am willing to go to jail for this tweet.”

Earlier, the Leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha, Adhir Chowdhury, wrote to Speaker Birla about the ruckus in Parliament, which he called an orchestrated attempt by the party in government to stall House proceedings. He also complained of having to address a muted microphone for three days.

The ruling BJP continued to demand an apology from Rahul Gandhi over a speech he had given in London, which they alleged amounted to denigrating the country's image. On the other hand, the Congress and other opposition parties remained steadfast in their demand for the BJP to announce a probe into Adani's alleged financial malpractices, in reference to Hindenburg's report.

Chowdhury also alleged that the voice of the opposition is being suppressed, while members of the ruling party are being allowed to raise their voices even to stall proceedings. He also told the Speaker that Rahul Gandhi's statement in London on 'Indian democracy being under threat under the BJP rule' is being substantiated by the happenings in Parliament, citing incidents of muted microphones.
