Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao's party, the ruling Bharatiya Rashtriya Samithi (BRS), has announced its opposition to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) if a bill is introduced in Parliament.
The Chief Minister expressed concern that the BJP-led NDA government is deliberately causing discord among the people and diverting attention from the nation's development. He accused the government of planning tactics to divide the country under the guise of implementing the UCC.
In an official release, CM K Chandrasekhar Rao stated, "The BJP-led NDA government is already fomenting trouble among people in different ways, ignoring the nation's development, and is again planning tricks to divide the people of the country in the name of UCC." He further emphasised his party's unequivocal opposition to the government's decision, which he believes undermines the unity in diversity that the country is known for. Consequently, the BRS will oppose the UCC.
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) president Khalid Saifullah Rahmani, along with a delegation that included AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi, met with CM K Chandrasekhar Rao to discuss their concerns regarding the UCC bill. The delegation urged the Chief Minister to oppose the proposed legislation.
CM K Chandrasekhar Rao reiterated his party's commitment to standing against any attempt to divide the country's citizens and noted their opposition to the UCC. The BRS firmly believes in preserving the nation's unity in diversity and will actively resist any actions that threaten this principle.
The UCC has been a contentious issue in India, as it seeks to establish a common set of laws governing personal matters such as marriage, divorce, and inheritance for all citizens, irrespective of their religious affiliation. The proposal has faced opposition from various quarters, with concerns raised about its potential impact on religious and cultural practices.
