2020 Northeast Delhi riots: Tahir Hussain gets bail for five cases, but to remain in custody

New Delhi: Former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain, who has been under custody on various charges in connection with the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots, secured bail in five cases from the Delhi High Court, however, he would remain in custody due to other cases.

Justice Anish Dayal of the Delhi High Court gave bail on condition to Hussain, who had been booked under various charges, including rioting, mischief by fire, and criminal conspiracy, among others.

However, despite the bail being granted, he will remain in custody due to other cases registered against him, including the Delhi Police's "larger conspiracy" case, in which he has been charged under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

The granting of bail to Hussain comes after a Delhi court framed charges against him, his brother Shah Alam, and four other individuals in one of the Northeast Delhi riots cases. The court had previously stated that the mob had a "clear-cut objective in mind, to kill and harm Hindus."

During the bail proceedings, senior advocate Salman Khurshid, representing Tahir Hussain, argued that his client had not been initially named in the witness statements, although his name appeared in subsequent statements.

Khurshid further highlighted that all the co-accused in these cases had already been granted bail, leaving Hussain as the only one remaining in custody.
