Sweden tops Global Passport Index 2026, India ranked 125th

Sweden has retained the top position in the Global Passport Index 2026 released by Global Citizen Solutions, while India has slipped one place to 125th in the latest rankings.

The index evaluates the overall strength of passports from 197 countries using 14 indicators.

The rankings are based primarily on three core pillars: enhanced mobility, investment, and quality of living.

According to the report, the assessment is designed to measure how a person's country of origin influences access to travel, economic opportunities, and quality of life.

Sweden secured the highest overall score of 96.05, while Afghanistan remained at the bottom of the rankings with a score of 23.10.

The report notes that the global travel landscape in 2026 has been shaped by the expansion of automated border control systems, greater visa liberalisation in parts of Asia, and continuing disparities in global mobility between wealthier and poorer nations.

Switzerland ranked second, followed by Finland in third and Germany in fourth. The Netherlands and Denmark shared the fifth position, while Ireland ranked seventh. The United Kingdom was placed eighth, followed by Norway in ninth and Singapore in tenth. France and the United States were tied for 11th position.

India was ranked 125th this year, down from 124th in the 2025 edition of the index. Before 2025, India's passport ranked 127th, indicating little change in its global position over recent years.

The five lowest-ranked passports in the 2026 index were those of the Syrian Arab Republic, Yemen, South Sudan, Somalia, and Afghanistan, occupying the 193rd, 194th, 195th, 196th, and 197th positions, respectively.
