Supreme Court takes up Kolkata rape-murder case on its own

New Delhi: In the brutal rape and murder of a Kolkata doctor inside a medical college there, the Supreme Court has taken it up on its own and listed to hear on Tuesday, NDTV reported.

The case, which is already being heard by the Calcutta High Court, will be heard by a three-judge Supreme Court bench headed by the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud.

The case reached the high court after the victim’s parent and others felt displeasure with the progress of the case under the state police. Hearing the case, the high court also expressed its displeasure at both the state police and the state administration.

Since the beginning of the case being probed by the state police, there were doubts and questions raised against them. These include the delay in allowing the women’s parents to see the victim’s body and the postmortem report. Also, the prompt arrest of a civic volunteer made the case an open and shut-one, NDTV reported.

Further, there were doctors who opinioned off the record that the nature of the wounds the victim sustained showed the involvement of more than one assaulter. Also, there were reports that the police cremated the body in a hurry, though Kolkata police denied the allegation.

Meanwhile, rival football fans in Kolkata take to the streets to protest the rape and murder of the doctor. Also, Sunday’s Derby match between East Bengal and Mohan Bagan was cancelled due to possible mob violence, NDTV reported.

Police have issued a ban on large gatherings from 4 pm till midnight on Sunday in a bid to prevent potential untoward incidents.
