Srinagar MP Mehdi, ex-Mayor Mattu booked in FIRs over Iran protest posts

Srinagar Police has filed FIRs against Lok Sabha MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and former Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu for allegedly spreading false, misleading social media content on Iran protests.

Mehdi claimed his security was downgraded to silence his criticism of "atrocities," calling it a "laughable" tactic by J&K Police and administration. "Such foolish acts won't stop me from calling out violations of law, freedom, and democracy," the NC leader posted on X. He vowed to continue "to the last drop of my blood," inspired by his martyred father.

Mattu said his security was abruptly withdrawn for comments on Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's killing in US-Israel strikes and BJP's "moral abdication" on Iran's plight. "A measure aimed to silence me," he posted on X, rejecting forced neutrality on Israel's actions. He affirmed it won't deter him from seeking accountability.

Police cited "credible inputs" of fabricated posts intended to incite fear, disturb order, and spark unrest. The content risks public disharmony and stability, they said. FIRs No. 02/2026 and 03/2026 were registered at Cyber Police Station under BNS Sections 197(1)(d) and 353(1)(b).
