New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday issued a notice after late gangster Mukhtar Ansari’s son Umar Ansari in a prayer alleged that his father died from poisoned food and denial of treatment, The Indian Express reported.
Meanwhile, appearing for the petitioner, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal pointed out that “It was not a death simpliciter, but was the result of specific action taken by the jail authorities”.
Alongside this, a bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and S V N Bhatti recorded Kapil Sibal’s submission.
Pressing for an inquiry into the matter, Sibal further told the court that “All we can say is…what we feared, happened…the man was sent back to the jail…this is shocking”. Justice Roy remarked, “We can’t bring him back…you were apprehending an encounter sort of a situation…”
However, Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj stressed that the original petition sought transfer of Mukhtar Ansari to any jail outside Uttar Pradesh alongside protection for him.
As for the fresh notice, Nataraj sought four weeks to file response.
Five-time MLA, Mukhtar Ansari who was in jail since 2005 died of what reports said a heart attack on March 28, 2024.
His autopsy report said the cause of death was “heart attack/myocardial infarction”, ruling out any poison in the viscera.
