Series of State polls this year are viewed as semis to 2024 LS polls

New Delhi: In 2023, a series of state assembly polls are going to be conducted, and they are considered as the semifinals towards the general election in 2024, writes PTI.

The crucial states of Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Telangana are going for elections this year, and this is in addition to the North-East.

In the North-East, Nagaland, Tripura and Meghalaya will be the first to have polls this year, which would most likely be on Febraury-March since the terms of incumbent governments there will end in March.

The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party now rules Nagaland and the National People’s Party in Meghalaya, while BJP is in Tripura.

After the NE polls, it would be Karnataka next in line. The incumbent legislative assembly in the state, of 224 members, will end on May 24. Therefore polls are expected here late in April or early May.

The final leg of elections this year could be at the end of the year. The terms of the legislative assemblies of Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Telangana are ending in December or in January next. Polls in these five states might be held together.

Finally, the assembly polls in the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir could also happen, PTI reports. Citing sources, PTI says that the J&K polls might happen in the summer of 2023. The final electoral roll for the UT was published in November last, which was the first since Article 370 was abrogated in 2019.
