Schools, PU colleges to remain closed till the end of December in Karnataka

On Monday, 23 November, the Karnataka government after much deliberation made the decision not to open schools and PU colleges on December 1.

This decision was made in a meeting that Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and primary and secondary education minister S Suresh Kumar held with the education department. Health and Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar was also present to advise against the same.

This decision was made for a variety of reasons, some of them being the fear of the children spreading the virus to their household members who may be at higher risk than them. In addition to this, while currently, the trend in cases is a decline, they are unsure if this will continue.

Further, the weekend has shown a sudden upsurge in new cases. The increase in cases after the festivities and the reopening of colleges has evidently played a role in the decision made to keep the schools closed till the end of December.

If the upsurge continues throughout the state, there will be no choice but to shut down colleges once more.
