SC grants time to establish permanent commission to women in Navy

New Delhi: In an effort to combat gender-based disparities in the army, the Supreme Court has granted a grace period until December 31 to effect permanent commission for women officers in the Navy. The bench was comprised of Justices D.Y Chandrachud, Indu Malhotra and Indira Banerjee.

On March 17 2020, the Court had ordered that women officers underground Short Service Commissions should have their applications accepted and should be given the same permanent positions as their male counterparts. 5 female officers whose applications for permanent commissions had been delayed filed the case. They will receive 25 lakhs as compensation and the court has ordered their applications to be accepted within 4 weeks.

The Central Government had asked for more time to affect the judgement given the COVID-19 pandemic and associated issues.
