Kolkata: The parents of the junior doctor who was raped and murdered at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata in August this year have approached the Calcutta High Court, requesting a fresh investigation into the case due to dissatisfaction with the current investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The parents expressed their lack of faith in the ongoing investigation and demanded a new probe from the beginning. They filed a petition before a single-judge Bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, who admitted the case. The matter is expected to be heard next week.
In their petition, the victim's parents raised concerns that the trial process, which has already started, could cause the investigation to go in the wrong direction unless the High Court intervenes promptly. This petition follows the decision of a special court in Kolkata, which granted "default bail" to two individuals accused of tampering with evidence. The CBI had failed to file a supplementary charge sheet within the mandatory 90 days, resulting in the release of former R.G. Kar principal Sandip Ghosh and former SHO of Tala Police Station Abhijit Mondal. Ghosh remains in custody due to a parallel investigation into financial irregularities at R.G. Kar, while Mondal has been granted bail.
So far, the CBI has filed only one charge sheet, identifying civic volunteer Sanjay Roy as the "sole prime accused" in the rape and murder case.
In response to the handling of the investigation, the victim's parents have also changed their legal representation at the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, the West Bengal Junior Doctors' Front, which had previously suspended protests for the larger public interest, has warned of resuming their agitation if the situation does not improve.
