Restaurant owner shot dead in Ranchi for serving chicken biryani for veg

Restaurant owner Vijay Nag was shot dead in Ranchi, allegedly by a customer angered over being served non-vegetarian biryani instead of the vegetarian dish he had ordered, leading to a violent confrontation that turned fatal. The incident occurred late on Saturday night, shocking residents and prompting a swift police investigation.

According to police officials, the customer, who remains unidentified, had ordered vegetarian biryani from Nag’s restaurant and took the parcel home, only to discover it contained chicken. Upset by the mix-up, he reportedly called Vijay Nag to confront him over the error, and the conversation soon escalated into an argument, The Indian Express reported.

Later that night, around 11.30 pm, the customer returned to the restaurant with three associates, and what began as a verbal dispute turned into a heated altercation that ended in tragedy.

During the scuffle, the assailant allegedly drew a gun and fired at Nag, hitting him in the chest before fleeing the scene with his accomplices. People nearby rushed to the restaurant after hearing the gunshot and found Nag lying on the floor, after which he was taken to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, where doctors declared him dead.

Police from Kanke station, accompanied by senior officers, reached the spot shortly afterwards, barricaded the area, and began efforts to identify and apprehend the attackers. Preliminary inquiries suggest the dispute may not have been limited to the biryani confusion, as there are suspicions of an underlying property conflict involving Nag.

Meanwhile, family members staged a protest demanding the arrest of all those involved within 24 hours, warning of larger demonstrations if the culprits were not caught. Police are now examining CCTV footage from the restaurant and surrounding areas to trace the shooters and bring them to justice.
