Restaurant employee arrested in Kolkata for serving beef to YouTuber

Kolkata: Kolkata Police have arrested an employee of a popular bar-cum-restaurant on Park Street for allegedly serving beef instead of mutton to YouTuber Sayak Chakraborty.

The arrest was made on Saturday, a day after Chakraborty lodged a complaint at the Park Street Police Station on Friday night.

Confirming the action, a senior Kolkata Police officer said that a case has been registered against the accused employee of the Park Street restaurant, and an investigation into the incident is underway.

According to the complaint, Sayak Chakraborty visited the well-known bar-cum-restaurant Olypub on Friday night along with two friends. They had ordered a mutton steak but were allegedly served beef instead.

Following the incident, Chakraborty shared a video on social media showing an argument with the restaurant’s waiter and manager. The video subsequently went viral.

In the Facebook video, Chakraborty narrated his experience, claiming that despite ordering mutton, beef was served to him. In the clip, he is heard saying, “Do you know that I am a Brahmin? How can you serve beef to me?” At one point, the restaurant manager was seen smiling, prompting one of Chakraborty’s friends to respond, “This is not a matter to laugh at.”

The incident also drew political reactions, with the Bharatiya Janata Party criticising and condemning the restaurant.

BJP leader Keya Ghosh, in a social media post, said that a well-known blogger and actor, along with his friends, had ordered a mutton steak at Olypub but were served beef steak instead. She alleged that the waiter later returned with a mutton steak, claiming it was a mistake, and that the manager also attempted to dismiss the matter as an error while smiling. Questioning the incident, she asked why Hindus were being made “a soft target” and said there would have been outrage if a different kind of meat had been served to another community.
