#RejectZomato trends after executive asks Tamil Nadu customer to learn 'national language Hindi'

Food delivery app Zomato is facing harsh criticism on social media platforms after its chat support executive asked a customer from Tamil Nadu to learn 'national language Hindi'. Soon after his tweet went viral, 'Reject Zomato' started trending on Twitter in no time, with social media users slamming the company.

Identified as Vikash, the aggrieved customer took to his Twitter handle and shared screenshots of the conversation he had with the executive.

"Ordered food in zomato and an item was missed. Customer care says the amount can't be refunded as I didn't know Hindi. Also takes lesson that being an Indian I should know Hindi. Tagged me a liar as he didn't know Tamil. @zomato not the way you talk to a customer," he tweeted.

Through the screenshots, it can be noticed that Vikash was encountering issues with his order. The Zomato Chat support executive tells the customer that they have spoken to the restaurant five times but there is a "language barrier". To this, the customer replies, "That is not my matter of concern".

Vikas then demanded a refund and said that they should have hired people who understand the language. In reply, the executive said, "For your kind information Hindi is our national language. So it is very common that everybody should know Hindi a little bit."

Hashtag #RejectZomato trended on the micro-blogging website and people shared their responses on the matter.

"Yes Hindi is not the national language, It is just one of the Official languages of INDIA.#Reject_Zomato for delivering the Hindi language as national Language, one user wrote."

Soon, the company on Tuesday morning came out with a formal statement announcing the termination of the employee for "negligence towards our diverse culture."

"Vanakkam Vikash, we apologise for our customer care agent's behaviour. Here's our official statement on this incident. We hope you give us a chance to serve you better next time. Pls don't #Reject_Zomato," read their tweet.
